Why the Story of Israel Still Matters in the Last Days
From the beginning of Scripture to the final pages of Revelation, God chose Israel to stand as a living testimony of His character, His faithfulness, and His redemptive plan for all nations. Israel is not a side note in the biblical story, it is the stage God Himself selected to reveal who He is.
In a generation overflowing with confusion, distortion, and rising hostility toward God’s purposes, the witness of Israel shines with clarity. For believers today, especially those longing to walk in God’s ways and discern the times, we must understand why Israel matters and what her story declares.
Israel first reveals the faithfulness of God. When the Lord entered into covenant with Abraham in Genesis 12:1–3, He established promises that would echo through history – the promise of a land, a people, and a blessing that would extend to all nations. Despite exile, dispersion, persecution, and relentless global attempts to erase the Jewish people, God has preserved them. Their existence is prophetic. Israel stands as living proof that God keeps His word. If He keeps His covenant with Israel, then we can trust Him to keep His promises to every believer who follows Yeshua.
Israel also demonstrates the holiness and justice of God. Through her, the Lord revealed His standards: His Torah, His covenant expectations, and His call to walk in righteousness. Israel was called to be a kingdom of priests and a light to the nations (Exodus 19:6; Isaiah 49:6). When she obeyed, blessing followed. When she rebelled, discipline came. Yet even in discipline, mercy was never absent. Her history becomes a public testimony that God loves deeply, judges righteously, and restores mercifully. In a world that calls evil good and good evil, Israel’s story re-centers us on the unchanging character of God.
Israel proclaims the salvation of God. The Messiah, Yeshua, came through Israel. He is the fulfillment of the promises made to the patriarchs. His life, death, resurrection, and promised return are inseparably tied to the people and the land of Israel. The apostle Paul declared that salvation goes “to the Jew first and also to the Greek” (Romans 1:16). Israel was chosen as the vessel through which God’s redemptive plan would flow outward to the entire world. This alone makes her witness essential in the last days.
Israel further reveals the sovereignty of God over history. The rebirth of the modern State of Israel in 1948 stands as one of the clearest fulfillments of biblical prophecy in modern times (Ezekiel 36–37). No other ancient nation has been uprooted, scattered for centuries, and then returned to the same land while preserving its language, identity, and faith. Israel’s survival is supernatural. Her existence confronts the world with the undeniable reality that God directs the course of nations and will bring His purposes to completion. (I’ll touch more on this in another article.)
The prophets consistently point to Jerusalem as the epicenter of the end of the age, the Day of the Lord, and the reign of the Messiah. Scripture declares that Messiah will return to Jerusalem (Zechariah 14:4), that Israel will be restored spiritually (Ezekiel 36:26–27), that the nations will gather against her (Zechariah 12:3), and that Yeshua will rule the earth from Zion (Isaiah 2:2–4). To understand biblical prophecy, one must understand Israel. To discern the times, one must watch Israel. To prepare for the return of Messiah, one must align with God’s revealed purposes for Israel.
Finally, Israel calls believers back to God’s ways. The modern Church has often distanced itself from the very foundation upon which it was built. Yet Israel stands as a reminder of God’s ancient paths: His covenant faithfulness, His Torah, and His expectation that His people live set-apart lives. Israel’s witness calls believers to return to biblical discipleship, to understand the continuity between the Old and New Covenants, to honor the Jewish roots of the faith, to reject replacement theology, and to embrace the Messiah of Israel within the story of Israel itself. This is not about elevating Israel above the nations; it is about recognizing God’s design and returning to it.
In these last days, as deception increases and nations rage, Israel stands as a signpost pointing to God’s unfolding plan. Her story declares that God is faithful, God is sovereign, and God is returning. And He is calling His people, Jew and Gentile alike, to align with His heart, walk in His covenant, and prepare for the return of the King.
This is the witness of Israel.
